Veterans Day

I spent 6 ½ years in the US Navy and on Veterans Day, I usually reflect back on that time. Sometimes I even pull out a few pictures (I posted one from boot camp). It was some time ago that I served, 1987 – 1994.
Although it was not my job when I joined, I learned a lot about computers while in the Navy. At my 2nd command, our base went from 2 computers to over 200. There was a slight panic and a group was thrown together to manage this influx of computers. Me and 3 guys formed this new “IT Department.” We taught ourselves how to set them up, install software, train the end-user, and troubleshoot both hardware and software issues.
I learned DOS, Dbase, Harvard Graphics, Quattro Pro, an application suite I think called Enable, and lots of other software I can’t even remember now. I set up a BBS (Bulletin Board System) for our base and conducted risk assessments.
Remember when the mouse pointer used to be square?

It is amazing how far things have come.

  1. Can I link a Calendar item and Task item together?
  1. It is not possible to directly create a Task item within a Calendar Appointment or Meeting item. However, you can create all the items separately first and then open the Appointment or Meeting item and create links to the Task items instead.

Insert Outlook Item
To create links to other Outlook items, open the appointment or meeting from your Calendar via a double click and choose:

Insert - Outlook Item

From the folder list at the top, select the Tasks folder
From the item list as the bottom, select the Tasks that you wish to associate with the appointment or meeting
Select the option; Insert as: Shortcut

Click OK to return to your opened appointment or meeting form.
  1. How can I save multiple emails in Outlook?

  1. Here is a solution I like, especially if I most likely will not need the emails again, but want to have them for just in case:
Select the emails, print to pdf.

  1. Can you send more than one email to OneNote?
  1. Yes. Simply select the emails in Outlook and Send to OneNote. OneNote will create a page for each email.

What's New in Windows 10

  • Start menu is back, and it’s customizable.
  • Traditional and modern apps look and function more similarly.
  • Settings is the new Control Panel (although Control Panel is still hanging around).
  • Improved File Explorer includes Quick Access area and improved customization options
  • Task View to display multiple open windows
  • New Desktop allows user to create multiple desktops with different apps/windows open.
  • Snap Assist, Corner Snap, and Snap Fill to select and easily place open windows on your screen. And, Snap improvements for multiple monitors.
  • Cortana to search computer and Internet (use voice or keyboard input).
  • Action Center as a clearinghouse for information and settings (replaces Charms).
  • Microsoft Edge is Microsoft’s new Internet browser and Reading View, Hub, and Web Note.
I have been using Windows 10 only a week now. I upgraded from Windows 7. I have read a lot of reservations regarding Windows 10, but I have to say I really like it.
The only drawback I have had so far is a couple of add-ins I need will not work in Edge. I am still using Chrome and have not explored the new browser, Edge.
